“We love our dogs. We hate cancer.” That’s the message behind Bark for Life, the American Cancer Society’s Canine Companionship fundraiser in Santa Clarita.
The event celebrates dogs that have survived cancer and the companionship they provide to people facing the disease. It also raises money for cancer research, says Abby Smith.
The American Cancer Society raises funds through events including Bark for Life and Relay for Life. Kathleen Pavard says those efforts have brought in several million dollars over the years. Santa Clarita’s Relay for Life is now the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind in California, she says.
Carol Calkins says fundraising helps support research into the many forms of cancer and helps share information about prevention and treatment.
The event also recognizes the comfort dogs can bring to people who are ill. Brad Peach says a dog’s company can lift someone’s spirits, and visits from dogs can bring happiness to cancer patients.
Cancer remains a challenge, but Bark for Life brings the community together to support people and families affected by the disease.
