About a couple of weeks ago, graffiti was discovered at the College of the Canyons. Spray paint was applied across multiple buildings, containing messages throughout the campus, an act that has angered COC officials.

On April 24th, COC officials say campus security caught a suspect under the nickname “Zoro,” who COC officials later identified as a COC Student. Campus Safety revealed that most of the graffiti was found in the student parking structure at Lot 4, with the suspect’s signature, quotes, and harmful messages, some of a racist nature.

“Graffiti that singles out particular individuals or groups of people with derogatory messages is not something that we tolerate here at the college….if we can identify the person responsible for it…They’ll be referred to go through the student discipline process.” Eric Harnish, COC Public Info Officer

According to Harnish, the damages for the graffiti are 18,000 dollars. COC officials confirmed that the student arrested by the Sheriff’s Department was 19-year-old Avery Marshall.

Talking to a student who attends College of the Canyons gives input about the matter,

“You know, the law is the law…Whether he was aware or not, the laws exist beyond your understanding of them,” Calvin Garingan.

We contacted the Sheriff’s Department regarding the case, but there was no response.

Currently, Marshall has been released and is soon to be in court.

It is part of the college’s matter and response to students that “if you see something, say something.”
