Kennels crowded with more animals coming in and being adopted. The Castaic Animal Center is working to keep its animals healthy amidst a new disease.

“So we’ve had over the past few weeks a lot of upper respiratory infection,” said Dona Harmon with the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control department.

This, however, is not the traditional kennel cough most are used to.

The LA County Department of Public Health’s Veterinary Public Health Program is cautioning owners to stay alert for symptoms of cough, runny nose, sneezing, and lack of energy for an atypical canine infectious respiratory disease.

“Several animals are currently being treated at the shelter for upper respiratory infections,” said Harmon.

“Due to the proximity of pets and visitors, respiratory infections like this spread rapidly.”

To help minimize the spread. It’s important to keep your dogs away from public spaces, vaccinate and report any symptoms to your veterinarian.
