They say when one door closes, another opens—but what happens when the whole campus closes? For many students, the BaNC is that open door, ensuring no one goes hungry, even when COC isn’t operating as usual.

The BaNC is a vital resource for College of the Canyons students, offering free groceries, hygiene products, and essential support to ensure no one has to choose between their education and basic needs. During Thanksgiving, they go even further by providing special assistance, such as meals and resources, to help students celebrate the holiday without added stress.

“Next week, we’re giving out 150 Thanksgiving meals already prepackaged. Foods they can make at home and it’s for families 3-6 and they should have enough food to last for the couple days were closed,” said Sarah Cox, Director of BaNC.

This year marks Sarah Cox’s third as director of the Basic Needs Center. With a background as a mental health therapist in Antelope Valley,  Her goal here is to create a space of hope and support, helping students realize their full potential both in school and during breaks. Even when the campus is closed, the BaNC steps up by preparing meals, offering transportation assistance, and sharing information about local food banks and other resources. It’s all part of their mission to ensure students have access to the support they need, no matter the circumstances.

“And I’ve always wanted to help students see what their potential is, let them see that there is hope, find the resources and connect them. Let them understand that there is somebody there who cares for them, roots for them, and invests in them. I think this position enables me to do that,” said Cox.

This unwavering commitment reflects Cox’s vision for the Basic Needs Center: a place where students feel supported and empowered to thrive. The BaNC continues to offer resources through its website, including information on local food banks, meal programs, and other essential services, ensuring students have access to the help they need—no matter the time of year.
