From a young age, Emma Hussein, a freshman at West Ranch, has had a natural talent and love for swimming.

“It tests how much willpower I have and how strong I can be,” said Hussein.

“It proves that I am strong and that I can actually do the things that I want to do,” said Hussein.

Emma made the National Select Camp, where she will get a taste of what it’s like to be part of Team USA and gain knowledge, skills, and experiences that can help her improve her approach to the sport.

“I wasn’t really expecting it at all,” said Hussein. “I’m still shocked, but then again…I realize how much work I put into the sport, and I accept that I’ve gotten this far because it lines up with how hard I work at that place,” said Hussein.

Having a pool in her backyard led Emma’s mom to enroll her in swimming lessons when they quickly realized Emma had a natural talent for the sport. Swimming from such a young age to now can be exhausting, but Emma always does her best to stay afloat.

“I definitely get overwhelmed sometimes. I take a step back, and I realize that I have a lot going on, but I’m happy with what I have, so I get happy with that,” said Hussein.

Her Canyons Aquatic Club coach, Kyle Hastings, could not be more proud of Emma and the team for this accomplishment.

“She brings the ability to train hard and to push limits,” said Hastings.

“I think she’s also an example that if you work hard, stay positive, become a great teammate, or learn how to grow as a teammate, everybody at Canyons can maximize their potential,” said Hastings.
