Here in Santa Clarita, it’s the season of graduation.
With applause of excitement. It is a reminder of students’ achievements and memories up to now.
“Yeah, I mean, tonight was a crazy emotional roller coaster. One minute I’m crying, the next minute I’m celebrating with my friends and family,” says Jason Broderick, now a graduate of Castaic High School.
Despite this chapter in their lives ending and a new one opening, students and staff say they will miss much from this graduating class.
“They captured the experience over these last four years, which was such an unusual experience. Coming off the heels of COVID and, you know, masking up and everything like that, this class has made something special out of their time at Castaic High School, and we’re super proud of them,” says Lisa Soares, a Castaic High School Spanish teacher.
“Thinking about it now, all those memories definitely play a role,” said Monty Coleman, a Castaic High School graduate.
“Thinking about coming up to the school or even Saturday practices with football, everything. Without all that, it wouldn’t make this moment feel any better than it feels right now,” said Coleman.
During the ceremony, a student took the opportunity to acknowledge a teacher who played a crucial role in their development.
“Being able to present the Howl Award as I’m graduating really meant a lot to me,” said Connor Whitlach, a graduate of Castaic High School. “I presented the award to one of my favorite teachers, Ms. Van Duzy.”
“I’ve had her all four years of high school, whether that be in advisory or English, and her impact in my life has been profound, to say the least,” said Whitlach.
All of it combined, it’s an emotional time for some but a happy ending for others.
“I love these kids so much, and I’m sure as much as they say they’ve made an impact on them, like, I’ve made an impact on them, they’ve made an impact on me,” said Elise Allen, an art teacher at Castaic High School.
